How Side Hustles can help you

As a generation that does not have a long attention span, it can be hard to focus on one task for a long time. Nicaila Matthews Okome explains in “This is the side hustle revolution,” that people have more than just one interest and do not want to work a traditional job for their whole lives. Side hustles are not just about bringing in an extra income, but also about following a passion you have.

Okome states that, “Around 15 percent of American workers don’t have traditional full-time jobs” (00:15). People like the freedom they get from having a side hustle, they can be their own boss and you can also push yourself more to achieve something. People are often very hard on themselves, so these side hustles are a great way to achieve something you have always wanted to push yourself to do.

My mom has been a teacher for over 20 years and began a side hustle 6 years ago because she felt she had not fulfilled her passion yet. This side hustle pushes her every day to do what she loves and to bring in an extra income so me and my siblings can enjoy life at college and experience traveling with family.

I also started a side hustle, the same one as my mom, because I have always loved taking care of my skin and when I started selling skincare on the side to meet new people. After doing it for a while I realized that I was making more money than I was at my part-time job, and that this was really something I loved to do. I get to help people with one of the most insecure things about a person, so seeing peoples face when their skin starts to clear up is something so special.

It may seem hard and that you do not have time, but I am a full-time student, I work a normal part-time job, I also do extracurricular activities. Having a side hustle sounds like it can be a lot of effort and it can, however, you are in control of your hours and being your own boss.

So many people have more than one passion and nothing should stop you from chasing it. Okome states,” I want to stress that not every side hustle is started because someone hates their job” (01:51). People start them because they want a new spark in their life. Without side hustles a lot of the things you buy would not be available because people did not take the time to acknowledge they want to start something new. No one wants to spend their loves working and doing something they are passionate, but they also do not want to drop the income that is coming in from their everyday job, this is why many side hustles are created.

Growing up in the new generations makes these side hustles easier to achieve because growing up nowadays kids are taught to follow their dreams and do what you love. You do not always have to know what you want to do for the rest of your life, you can always try new things. If working a 9 to 5 job every day is something that you know you will get tired of then maybe a side hustle is for you. I highly recommend watching, “This is the side hustle revolution” with Nicaila Matthews Okome.
