Bright blue water splashes on the side of the MV World Odyssey. People lay sprawled out on beach chairs letting the beaming sun hit them. A boy wearing run swim trunks runs and yells “full send.”
My initial reaction was “wow this kid is really about to cannonball in the cruise ship’s pool.” My second was “what the heck did he say?”
Full Send? I hear the term all the time, however, I never really knew what it meant until last spring when I was abroad at Semester at Sea. Everyone would say the phrase and I had no clue. For the longest time, I would pretend to understand the phrase but everyone would use it differently. The context never matched with another “full send” discussion.
After weeks of people saying full send and me being completely lost, I finally decided I cannot continue to pretend to know what it means. I asked my friends and they all looked at me if I was crazy. “What do you mean what does full send mean?” They then tried to explain but all of their explanations were different but I got the gist.
Nowadays, I say Full Send all the time. In general, I feel like the meaning behind the phrase it’s just to go all out. Carpe Diem as the Roman poet, Horace once said. Honestly, when someone says full send I see it as they’re basically saying “screw it,” and do whatever they have to do. Sometimes the full send could be something that is major to them but to someone else it’s nothing. Or it could be a huge deal to everyone. When someone decides to full send, they take themself out of their comfort zone and just go for it.
I personally full send whenever it comes to my passions, i.e., things relating to arts and entertainment. For example, when I first moved down to Tampa I was not as social as I am today, but I wanted to break out of my shell. I wanted to get involved with things that I like so I said and started going to events like the indie flea market. So many hipsters and fun people go that I had a chance of networking and meeting people in the community, while also being surrounded by art and live music. It was a full send moment without me knowing the phrase. This is just an example on a smaller scale for arts and entertainment. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and I did, I went for it.
Other ways to have full send moments with arts and entertainment would be concerts. How can one not full send at a concert? Literally, deciding to go to a concert and buy tickets, especially if they are expensive or really good seats is a full send. When I decided to buy meet and greet tickets with my friend SZA because all general admission tickets were sold out that was a full send moment. We contemplated if it was worth buying but then realized that she’s probably going to be untouchable after this tour so we might as well meet and see her now. A true full send moment.
To be quite honest, it’s almost hard to not have a full send moment when it comes to anything relating to arts and entertainment. I hope you have many full send moments!
